History of Advance.hr

The history of Advance.hr covers its development from a small web project launched in 2005 into a major independent media platform dedicated to analytical and professional reporting on global events.

1. The Beginnings of the Project

The Advance.hr project began in 2005 as a small technological and media experiment. In its early years, the focus was on developing web solutions for local businesses, at a time when an online presence was only beginning to emerge. Alongside technical services, we also developed additional content with an emphasis on culture and the promotion of young artists.

2. Domain Registration and the First Shift

The advance.hr domain was registered on October 3, 2008, in the midst of the global financial crisis, which hit smaller businesses particularly hard. Difficulties with payment collection and market instability prompted a strategic shift toward content-driven and analytical journalism, an area that had already brought together members of the team and close collaborators.

3. From a Technology Project to a Media Outlet

Between 2008 and 2010, we remained focused on innovative web solutions, while at the same time developing a growing interest in covering international events. The decisive moment came in late 2010 with the beginning of the Arab Spring, when we noticed a major gap between global events and the way they were being presented in dominant media outlets.

4. Formation of the Journalistic Platform

During 2010 and 2011, we collectively focused on reporting on international developments. The 2011 war in Libya, unrest in Syria, and other key events shaped our journalistic approach: professional, clear, and free from the repetition of dominant narratives. Readers across the region recognized the value of such an approach.

5. Audience Growth and a Key Decision

As our readership grew, it became clear that we wanted to devote ourselves fully to analytical journalism. We decided to reject traditional funding models such as advertising or corporate sponsorships, which would have threatened our independence and editorial freedom in the long term. Instead, we chose cooperation with our audience as the only sustainable path.

6. Development of the Subscription Model

In 2012, we developed one of the first online content payment systems in this region. Despite the initial risk and the low culture of online payment at the time, the system took hold and confirmed that readers valued persistent, high-quality, and independent journalism.

7. Independence as the Only Path

Over the following years, we built a stable funding model based exclusively on reader subscriptions. Thousands of subscribers enabled us to maintain complete editorial freedom, without external advertising, donations, state support, or EU funds. Advance.hr became a unique project in the regional media landscape.

8. Technical Development and Redesigns

The redesigns of 2012, 2015, 2018, and the latest development in 2025 followed our vision of long-term sustainability. Each version brought technological progress, while the 2025 system was designed as a platform capable of serving for decades, with modern infrastructure and continuous improvement.

9. Continuity of Vision

Despite changes in internal structure over the years, the leadership and editorial team remain committed to the idea that Advance.hr must remain independent, credible, and consistent in its principles. Our slogan, “Wherever the path leads, it leads forward,” reflects the direction in which we wish to continue moving in the future.
